Believed to be native to East Africa, tamarind grows extensively throughout India, South-east Asia and the West Indies. Tamarind trees are semi-evergreen tropical trees that can reach up to 80 ft tall.

The tamarind fruit grows in dark brown fruit pods and is produced in many different forms  - compressed, dried, pulverised into a concentrate or paste - all popular  depending on their culinary uses.

It has an uniquely tangy yet fruity flavour that is a refreshing addition to curries, sauces, chutneys, marinades and drinks. It is a good store cupboard ingredient to have to hand, particularly if you're a fan of cooking Asian dishes. The paste can last up to 3 months if stored properly in the fridge or dried tamarind will last a lot longer. It is also used in many Mexican dishes and is the key ingredient in the classic Worchestshire sauce.

Goodbye June

Netflix - Release date 24 Dec 2025

This movie was released just in time for Christmas and had all  elements to tug at the holiday heart strings, including a nativity play and flurries of snow. The story line depicts the average dysfunctional family who are drawn together to be by their mother's bedside as she endures terminal cancer with only days to live. Three sisters and one brother find themselves having overcome their differences and conflicting personalities during the course of the movie, with plenty of arguments and tears along the way.

Written by Kate Winslet's son Joe Anders, his debut movie must be commended for its honesty and relatable content. It has an all-star cast with Kate Winslet, Helen Mirren, Toni Colette, Andrea Riseborough, Johnny Flynn and Timothy Spall.

There are no surprises in this movie - what you see is what you get. Their father's condition is a little unclear as to whether he is suffering from dementia or is just a nasty person. That said, Goodbye June is a decent watch.
